Letter from the ICIAM President

Dear  members of all ICIAM member societies:

The COVID-19 pandemic has become a worldwide health crisis and has affected the lives of billions of people around the world. Against this difficult backdrop, mathematics is playing an important role in the modelling of the epidemic's evolution, and in guiding decision-makers in their response. ICIAM encourages mathematicians to respond to this challenge and carry out related research to fight against the pandemic. Thanks to our past-president Maria Esteban, ICIAM has set up a page with links to webpages provided by our member societies with activities and projects on the pandemic from mathematicians from around the world, see http://www.iciam.org/mathematics-covid-19.

We have tried our best to keep all of ICIAM's business going under this difficult situation. The scheduled April 2-3 officers meeting in Amsterdam was replaced by two virtual meetings on April 1 and 2. ICIAM has decided to postpone this year's Board meeting (tentatively to September) due to the pandemic, and the officers are working on contingency plans for a virtual Board meeting if we cannot host an in-person meeting in September.

We sincerely hope that the COVID-19 will be under control in the not too distant future and hope that we will be back soon to a normal life. Finally, we wish all of you a safe and healthy life.
