Gender Equality Proponent Gives Plenary Presentation at SIAM Annual Meeting
Prof. Emerita Marie-Francoise Roy (Université de Rennes, France), the first chair of the Committee for Women in Mathematics of the International Mathematical Union (2015-2022), gave SIAM's Activity Group in Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion's first plenary lecture at the 2025 SIAM Annual Meeting. The presentation, entitled "Women in Mathematics Around the World: Strategies for Gender Equality" included information on three topics, the Gender Gap in Science Project as it informed the field of mathematics, the success of the May 12 initiative celebrating women in mathematics, and the presentation of several items that help promote women in mathematics. A common theme of her presentation was that we can most effectively promote women in mathematics through celebration of their accomplishments. Prof. Roy currently serves the Standing Committee for Gender Equality in Science as its Communications Officer.
Gender Equality in Science Committee Issues Recommendations to Promote Gender Equality in Scientific Unions
The Standing Committee for Gender Equality in Science has issued a set of recommendations for scientific unions to help promote gender equality within their fields. These recommendations rely on the Gender Gap in Science (GGS) Project findings.
Gender Equality in Science Committee Issues 2024 Annual report
The Standing Committee for Gender Equality in Science issued its fourth annual report. This report includes aggregated numerical data of the involvement of women in various activities and programs of the Committee's member unions. In addition, there is information about recent activities of the Committee and about each of its member unions' activities and structures supporting gender equality. Two recent articles on the Gender Gap have appeared
Recently, two articles analyzing data developed during the Gender Gap in Science project have appeared. The first, examined the gender gap for mathematicians. It can be read in a recent article to be published in the EMS Magazine, a publication of the European Mathematical Society. The article’s title is ‘Aspects of the gender gap in Mathematics’, and it was written by Sophie Dabo-Niang, Maria J. Esteban, Colette Guillopé and Marie-Françoise Roy. The second article analyzed data related to teh gender gap in Africa and was done by the same group of authors. It is entitled ‘An analysis of the gender gap among African scientists’. The two articles are in English and are posted in an open French equivalent of arxiv called HAL.
Gender Equality Session at ICIAM 2023
The recent ICIAM 2023 meeting in Tokyo, Japan featured a two-part session on “Gender Equality in Mathematics: A Global Perspective.” This session included speakers from across the globe presenting material on the state of gender equality in mathematics in their countries, continents, and organizations that are addressing challenges related to supporting women in Mathematics. Gender Equality in Science Committee Hosts Webinar on the Findings of the Gender Gap in Science Project
The Standing Committee for Gender Equality in Science (SCGES) held its first hybrid webinar in February of 2023, entitled “How to Evaluate and Reduce the Gender Gap in Science?” This event was simultaneously a part of the SCGES webinar series and the Global Women’s Breakfast. The event took Tuesday 14 February 2023, at the Campus Condorcet, Conference Center, (in Greater Paris, France) and discussed the Gender Gap in Science project which ended in 2019. ICIAM Participates in Launch of New Database of Good Practices
A new database has been launched by the Gender Gap in Science Project. The database is a collection of initiatives that have been verified as effective in supporting women and girls. These initiatives target girls, young women, parents, and organizations in developing ways to support girls and women. The website where selected initiatives can be consulted is hosted by the International Mathematical Union and it can be found here. There are currently sixty-four initiatives listed from all over the globe. These initiatives reflect a variety of ways that have been built to encourage and empower women, to make their lives and their jobs more pleasant, to help each other, and to share experiences, etc. The organizers welcome additions to the database. if you have a suggestion to add, or know someone who has one, relevant initiatives can be submitted here.
ICIAM Co-Organized Inaugural Webinar in New Gender Equality in Science Webinar Series
This spring the Standing Committee for Gender Equality in Science launched a webinar series to raise awareness of gender equality issues in sciences. The inaugural session, co-organized by ICIAM and IMU and held Feb. 16, 2022, was on “Gender Equality in Mathematics.” The webinar featured a presentation on the results of the Gender Gap in Science project specific to Mathematics and Applied Mathematics as well as a panel session focused on the challenges facing women in mathematics and how the Association for Women in Mathematics has supported women in facing those challenges in the past and currently. The link to the recording can be found here, Future webinars will be held every 1-2 months and will feature gender equality issues from many different science domains. Participants are asked to register ahead of time for any webinar they would like to attend live. Registration links will be available on the relevant pages under the main webinar series page here.

Standing for Gender Equality in Science in times of Covid-19
In Dec. 2020 on the UN Human Rights Day, the Standing Committee for Gender Equality in Science released a call for all individuals and institutions engaged in science to join forces in supporting women colleagues whose research careers are jeopardized by the pandemic. Standing Committee on Gender Equality in Science
In 2020, a new Standing Committee on Gender Equality in Science was formed to support women and girls’ equal access to science education and fostering equal opportunity and treatment for females in their careers. See more about ICIAM’s participation here.
‘Gender Gap in Science’ Project
ICIAM was a supporting organization for the project, “A Global Approach to the Gender Gap in Mathematical, Computing, and Natural Sciences: How to Measure It, How to Reduce It?” serving as a supporting applicant, with membership on the executive committee and advisory board for the project. Funded by the International Science Council to produce data to better understand this gender gap and to support choices of interventions that international unions can feasibly undertake to address this gap. This project produced a final report with data collected which quantify the gender gap worldwide and which includes information about recommended interventions. This report can be downloaded here.
