1) Board meeting 2009: Oslo 21 May 2009
Urgent: You need to register with A.D. Fitt by 18 MARCH 2009!!!
After that date there is NO GUARANTEE for
- an invitation by the Norwegian Academy to participate
in some ABEL Prize events
- a reservation in an economical hotel.
Note that the dates had to be changed to 21 May 2009,
9:00 - 18:00, due to a shift of the Abel Prize ceremony.
All details of this change had been announced in my letter
Nr. 7. If you have not received that letter you can download it
from the restricted area of the website:
/
You can access the restricted area as follows:
log-in: iciam-representative
password: zurich
For your convenience I add the corresponding text at the end of this
letter Nr. 8.
2) Mailinglist repiciam [at] iciam.org (repiciam[at]iciam[dot]org) + sociciam [at] iciam.org (sociciam[at]iciam[dot]org)
Unfortunately I received information that some presidents and
representatives did not receive the letter Nr. 7. This can be due
to the mailing server or due to spam filters locally at the receiving
end. To localise such problems the letter Nr. 8 will be sent
twice. Once through the above mentioned mailing lists
and once from my address jeltsch [at] math.ethz.ch (jeltsch[at]math[dot]ethz[dot]ch). In case you receive only
one copy please inform Ross Moore ross [at] ics.mq.edu.au (ross[at]ics[dot]mq[dot]edu[dot]au) and
iciam [at] iciam.org (iciam[at]iciam[dot]org)
3) Call for nominations for a President-Elect
The board will elect in its meeting on 21 May 2009 a
President-Elect. The successful candidate will take up
the term as President-Elect on 1 October 2009 and will
automatically become President for the term, 1 October
2011 - 30 September 2015, and be Past-President from
1 October 2015 - 30 September 2017.
During the officers meeting in Singapore the procedure
for nominations has been discussed and has been slightly
modified.
When a nomination is received the president, Rolf Jeltsch,
will write to the nominee whether the nominee is willing to
serve if elected and whether she/he wishes to supply a
one-page "summary case" for her/his nomination. Nominations
and materials which has been received by the secretary,
Alistair Fitt, by 2nd April will be circulated by the
secretary.
According to our Bylaws nominations can also be made on
the floor at the board meeting. If this is done at the
board meeting a statement by the nominee that she/he is
willing to serve if elected is still needed.
To make the process more stable it would be better to
make nominations earlier.
4) Call for conferences in 2010 to request for support for
delegates from developing countries
The call for conferences to be held in 2010 will be on
the web in January 2009. in a few days. The deadline
for the call is 2nd April 2009. The level of support
remains unchanged.
5) Site visit for ICIAM 2015
The visiting site committee consits of
- Alistair Fitt
- Rolf Jeltsch
- Barbara Keyfitz
- Ian Sloan.
The committee visited
Beijing, Monday, 1 December 2008
Tokyo, Wednesday, 3 December 2008.
During the officers meeting in Singapore on Saturday,
6 December the format of the report and the procedure to
to create the report have been discussed. The site reports
will be circulated on 2 April 2009 by the secretary A. D. Fitt.
6) Officers meeting in Singapore
The officers of ICIAM would like to thank the Singapore
Mathematical Society and especially its President, Peter Pan,
and his staff for the generous hosting of the officers meeting.
On Friday, 5 December 8 lectures have been given, half of it
by officers of ICIAM and the other half by members of NTU
(Nanyang Technological University) and of NUS (National University
of Singapore). In the morning the lectures were held at NTU and in
the afternoon at NUS.
7) ICSU
ICSU is the International Council for Science. It holds its
general general assembly every three years. The 29th was held in
Maputo, Mozambique, 21 - 24 Octber 2008. The president particiapted
as a guest of the delegation of IMU. A report will be distributed
on April 2nd by the secretary, A.D. Fitt. The issue of a possible
'Associated Membership' will be discussed at the board meeitng in
Oslo, 21 May 2008.
8) Server problems.
In fall our server, which had been provided by the Mathematics
Department of Macquarie University, had a fatal crash. It was then
difficult to get a replacement. As Macquarie University had made
the decision no longer to host domains other than its own it made sense
to move the server to another location. The mathematics department of
ETH was willing to host the server until 30 September 2013. (This is
the date when the present President steps down as Past-President).
I am very happy to announce that Ross Moore will continue as the
webmaster. Let me thank him for his continuous support of the website,
his support for ICIAM 2003 and ICIAM 2007.
At this point ICIAM would like to express its great gratitude to
the Mathematics Department of Macquarie University for hosting
our website for so long. My thanks go also to the Department
of Mathematics at ETH, its systems group and computer services of ETH
to have put up the server and the support so quickly.
Unfortunately, the fatal crash did make that for several weeks our
website was down. I ask for your forgivingness. It is not easy to
fix systems if these are almost on opposite sides of the globe.
9) Check web site
Check and update information of your society on our website
As many societies have presidents and officers whose term end at
the end of a year it would be good if you inform us on all the
changes which happened in your society. At the moment this is
very important as we need the registration for the Board Meeting
in Oslo by 18 March 2009. Please use this moment
to quickly check on our website whether the information displayed
is still correct. Please check not only the information on the
public website: /
but also on the restriceted area. You can access the restricted area as follows:
log-in: iciam-representative
password: zurich
I send to you Seasons greetings and wish to all of You a Happy New Year
Sincerely Yours. Rolf Jeltsch
President ICIAM

we have to shift the Board meeting.
The new dates are as follows:

The board members are invited by
The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters
http://www.dnva.no/
http://www.dnva.no/c26889/index.html (english)
to take part in the following events related to the
Abel Prize.
- Abel Prize Ceremony, Tuesday, 19 May 2009, 14:00

everybody, i.e. no special invitation is needed.
You find pictures to this years events at
http://www.math.ufl.edu/photos/abel-ceremony.html
It is important, that the board members, which
will be attending are known early, say no later than
18 March 2009 so that
- the academy can plan the invitations
- we can reserve rooms in an economical hotel.
Please report the board members who will attend as soon as
possible, but no later than 18 March 2009 to
our
secretary Alistair D. Fitt
e-mail adf [at] maths.soton.ac.uk (adf[at]maths[dot]soton[dot]ac[dot]uk)
We need these board members and their e-mail so that we
can deliver to them additional information. No that for
those who register later than 18 march 2009 we can not
guarantee invitations by the Norwegian Academy to
events related to the Abel Prize.
