along or not.
2) Funds for ICIAM Prizes
As you see below some of our ICIAM prizes have a value of 1000 USD only.
This is ridiculously low compared to the reputation. It is the aim to rise
this to at least 3000 USD for 2011.
The proposal is to create a fund called 'ICIAM Prize fund' to rise these
amounts to a level which is more adequate. This can be done by trying
to find sponsors, e.g. companies, societies.
ICIAM PRIZE FUND
----------------
Any organisation, person is allowed to pay into this fund.
Payments can be defined to be
1. untouchable capital. This means only interest can be used
for the prizes. The interest paid would be decided by the officers each
year.
2. used in a particular year or several years, e.g. 2011;
or for the three years 2011, 2015 and 2019.
Both type of payments can be attached to one or several of the prizes.
Payments are acknowledged on the ICIAM website, on the press release and at the
prize ceremony.
-----------------
Note that currently the prizes are funded by payments of type 2. for each
occasion of USD 1000 + travel expenses by the supporting societies
CSIAM, GAMM, IMA, SEMA, SIAM, SIMAI, SMAI. This system is not touched by
the above proposal.
I urge you all to think of ways to increase the value of our ICIAM Prizes.
The current rules for the ICIAM prizes state:
Sect. 11. The amount of the prize is not fixed, but changes according to the
funds available. It is the intent that the size of the prize is of the order
of USD1000 in 1994, plus an amount that could cover the costs of travel to
the meeting. The amount will be determined prior to the announcement of each
prize.
Approved 13 October 2000
The value of the Prizes in 2007 will be $1,000 multiplied by the number of
supporting societies.
This meant:
ICIAM Pioneer Prize 1000 USD (SIAM)
ICIAM Collatz Prize 1000 USD (GAMM)
ICIAM Lagrange Prize 3000 USD (SMAI, SEMA, SIMAI)
ICIAM Maxwell Prize 1000 USD (IMA)
ICIAM Su Buchin Prize 1000 USD (CSIAM)
3) Offer to hold Board meeting 2009 during Abel prize ceremony in Oslo.
The Norwegian Academy of Sciences has offered to host the ICIAM board Meeting
2009 in Oslo in conjunction with the Abel Prize ceremony. The Prize Ceremony will
be on Tuesday 19 May 2009. On Wednesday there will be the Abel Prize lecture.
In order to be close to the event, one could probably do the ICIAM
board meeting on Sunday 17 May or on Thursday 21 May.
4) Call for Board meeting 2010
As schedules of all of us get tighter every year, I would like to fix the
Board meeting for 2010 already at the Board meeting in Vancouver. Therefore
I call for proposals for hosting the 2010 Board meeting.
Traditionally we had these board meetings in May, see table below.
To get in closer contact with our member societies it is planned to have the
Board meetings in conjunction with a scientific event. Possibilities can be
that most of the members of the board will present a lecture say in the two days
before the board meeting. This was successfully done by Li Tatsien, President
of CSIAM, on the occasion of the 2006 board meeting in Shanghai. A similar
event, but smaller had been orgnised by Ken Hayami in Tokyo in 2002. Another
possibility would be that the board meeting is done either before or after
a regular conference organised by one of our member societies.
Previous board meetings have been at
July 1999 Edinburgh
27 May 2000 Paris
26 May 2001 Helsinki
25 May 2002 Tokyo
12 July 2003 Sydney
22 May 2004 Zurich
21 May 2005 Florence
27 May 2006 Shanghai
21 July 2007 Zurich
12 April 2008 Vancouver
5) Call for Officers meeting December 2008
For the officers it is important to meet in person. However as the officers are
distributed all over the world it is time consuming to travel long distances for
a 1-2 day meeting. Moreover it is expensive. If such a meeting
can be combined with a scientific event of a member society officers could get
not only a closer contact to a member society and its activities, but could also
use their own research money, at least partly, to pay for the travel.
The next officers meeting will be due in December 2008. We shall have to prepare
the documents for the vote on the 2015 Congress site. For this reason it can not
be in a country from where there is a bid. However It would be practical to
in the far east as the site visits will be there.
6) EIMI study - call for collaborators
Our colleague from Portugal, JosŽ Francisco Rodrigues, Professor of Mathematics
at the University of Lisbon and President - Comiss‹o Nacional de Matem‡tica (Portugal)
proposes a new Study on Education and Training on Applied and Industrial Mathematics.
The Idea is that this be a joint collaboration between ICIAM and ICMI (International
Commission on Mathematical Instruction). The officers approved to support this idea
and for this reason I will fly to Lisbon on 7 February 2008 to formulate an initial
paper. The name of the study is "Educational Interfaces between Mathematics and
Industry" (EIMI).
At the moments I call upon you to suggest names of possible person to work in this
study. Please notify me as soon as possible, as we have to deliver the first proposal by
the first week of March, see schedule below.
It is intended that the presidents of ICMI and ICIAM agree not only in general but
also in the specific terms of the proposed Study, in particular, in the choice of the
IPC members.
The aim is that a book be produced ready for the ICIAM 2011 Congress of Vancouver.
Schedule:
i) Week of 3rd March 2008 - A first description of 2-3 pages and a general agreement
between ICMI and ICIAM for the choice of the 2 or 3 coordinators of the Study (CC),
and a preliminary sketch of the about 12-15 members for the International Program
Committee (IPC), that should be able to start working in April/May;
ii) May/October 2008 - preparation by the IPC of the Discussion Document (DD) in which
the "key issues and sub-themes related to the theme of the Study are identified,
presented and described in a preliminary way". J.F. Rodrigues believes to be able
to organize a IPC meeting in Portugal at the end of September or begin of October
for the final redaction of the DD, so that, it could be starting to circulate
"internationally as widely as possible in journals, journals, magazines,
newsletters, etc."
iii) December 2009 / February 2010 - the international ICMI Study Conference with a
limited number (50-100) of invited participants would take place in Portugal,
under the joint auspices of ICMI / ICIAM.
iv) Delivery of the manuscript for the book to Springer in February 2011.
7) Check web site
Check and update information of your society on our website
As many societies have presidents and officers whose term end at
the end of a year it would be good if you inform us on all the
changes which happened in your society. Please use this moment
to quickly check on our website whether the information displayed is still
correct. Please check not only the information on the
public website: /
but also on the restricted area. You can access the restricted area as follows:
