Letter to Presidents and Representatives of Member Societies of ICIAM

Dear Members of the Board Meeting of ICIAM in Vancouver 2008,
this e-mails is sent to all which are listed as representatives of
Member Societies even if they are for this meeting replaced by
somebody else. Ofcourse the replacing person receives a copy too.
As information it goes also to the presidents of Member Societies.
The Agenda for the meeting is attached. The same is true for the overall
schedule.
In order that you can prepare yourself I add some of the needed
papers.
1. Report by the Joint Committee on Quantitative Assessment of Research Citation Statistics (attached)
Our joint project with IMU and IMS on quantitative assessment practices
is quite long and hence should be studied beforehand. However this report is NOT for Distribution at this time. The reason is that it is NOT the final report. We shall handle this item in Point 11.2. The officers of
ICIAM have studied the report and support it as it is. We are happy that the representatives of IMU, John Ewing, IMS, Robert Adler, and ICIAM,
Peter Taylor have done such a great job. Please note that since there
are three societies involved IMU, IMS and ICIAM it is hoped
that the three societies are supporting the report. NOT doing so would weakening it dramatically. For this reason we should NOT start modifying the present report, except for very minor errors. If each society starts to make changes, we shall end up in a long dispute and the report would finally not get out. Note that the executive summary is NOT written for mathematicians, but for administrators and those who misuse citation data.
This is why it is longer than usual.
