1) Board meeting in Oslo 21 May 2009 + Thanks to the Norwegian Academy
The 2009 board meeting at the Building of the Norwegian Academy.
In addition Board Members had been invited to the Abel Prize ceremony
on Tuesday, 19 May, at which Mikhail Gromov received the Abel Prize
from King Harald. On Wednesday, 20 May, board members could attend
the Abel Prize lectures and the Abel Party in the evening.
At this point I would like to thank the Norwegian Academy for this
generous invitation. This invitation had been initiated by Ragnar
Winter, President of the Abel Foundation. My thanks extend to
Helge Holden who worked very hard for the practical logistics and
also to the staff of the Academy. I personally thanked the Academy
on behalf of ICIAM at the official Dinner on Monday in the Academy.
Due to limited space only some Board Members could attend. I used
this speech also to congratulate the Abel Prize Winner Mikhail
Gromov on behalf of ICIAM.
In this speech I promised the Academy that the ICIAM members will
help to promote the Abel Prize world wide. [see item 6)]
2) ICIAM 2015 in Beijing
Two excellent bids had been made, one by the CSIAM for Beijing and
one by JSIAM for Tokyo. Both bids had the same quality and hence
the vote was rather tight. The winner was Beijing. Current plans are
that it will be held 24-28 Aug 2015. However a small shift of the
dates might still be possible.
3) President-Elect 2009-2011 Barbara Keyfitz
Our treasurer Barbara Keyfitz had been elected in an uncontested
vote. Let me congratulate Barbara Keyfitz to this success and
wish her all the best for the next 8 years service for ICIAM
1/10/2009 - 30/9/2011 as President-Elect
1/10/2011 - 30/9/2015 as President
1/10/2015 - 30/9/2017 as Past-President
I very much look forward to working with her.
4) Invited speakers for ICIAM 2011
The Scientific Programm Committee under the two Co-chairs
Jerry Marsden and Ivar Ekeland had done an excellent job. The
proposed list of invited speakers has been approved unanimously.
They will be announced as soon the speakers have accepted the
invitation.
Already now I ask all our member societies to prepare to help
in the promotion of the congress ICIAM 2011 in Vancouver,
18-22 July 2011.
5) Board meeting 2010, Delhi, 14 August 9:00-18:00
Indian SIAM under the leadership of Abul Hasan Siddiqi has
invited the board to Delhi. Following the Board Meeting ISIAM is
organising a meeting on
Mathematics in Science and Technology 15-18 Aug in Delhi.
This is a satellite meeting of the ICM 19-27 Aug in Hyderabad.
Note that the IMU General Assembly is in Bangalore, 16-17 Aug.
6) Website Abel Prize
As described in point 1) I promised the Norwegian Academy that
we shall make an effort to promote the Abel Prize world wide.
Please make link on the home page of your society to the
Abel Prize website:
I have noted that AMS has already done so and this is a very nice
example of how this can be done
If, for some reason, it is not possible to have it on the homepage
permanetly please put it back on each year, say from 1 January - 30
June, as the Prize is announced in March and the ceremony is in May.
7) Ramanujan Prize for young mathematicians from developing countries:
Enrique R. Pujals
During the Abel Party on Wednesday 20 May the Ramanujan Prize
was given to Enrique R. Pujals of Brasil. For more details see
the web page: http://www.abelprisen.no/en/
8) Call for nominations for ICIAM Prizes
The deadline for nominations is 21 September 2009.
It is urgent that your society makes intensifies the promotion
for the nominations of our ICIAM Prizes. A flyer can be downloaded
from our webpage. Please announce it in your newsletter, electronic
distribution list and distribute flyers or use oral communication.
Nominatons are of course welcome.
9) Call for contributions to the ICIAM-ICMI Study on ÒEducational
Interfaces between Mathematics and IndustryÓ, EIMI.
At the Board Meeting in 2008 in Vancouver it was decided
that ICIAM would participate in this 20th ICMI study. The study
consists of two components: (Discussion Document)
* the Study Conference, and
* the Study Volume.
The Study Conference will be held in Lisbon, Portugal,
on April 19-23, 2010.
Submissions are due by September 15, 2009. These should be sent
to the two Co-chairs:
Alain Damlamian, damla [at] univ-paris12.fr (damla[at]univ-paris12[dot]fr), and
Rudolf Straesser, Rudolf.Straesser [at] math.uni-giessen.de (Rudolf[dot]Straesser[at]math[dot]uni-giessen[dot]de).
On our web page you'll find the "Discussion Document (dd)" and a
"flyer of the dd". Unfortunately in both documents it is a little
bit hidden that these are "Call for contributions".
Please advertise this ICMI-ICIAM Study using whatever means such
as by newsletter, e-mail distribution, website, flyers and
oral communication at the meetings of your organisation.
10) Olga Taussky-Todd lecture
At the board meeting it has been approved that the committee is
public. This committee consists of:

the almost final version of the call.
