Sarah Peluse awarded AWM Microsoft Research Prize
The Association for Women in Mathematics announced that Sarah Peluse will receive the seventh AWM Microsoft Research Prize in Algebra and Number Theory. She is recognized for her breakthrough work in number theory, combinatorics, ergodic theory, and representation theory. The prize will be presented on January 5, 2026, during the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Washington, DC.
Cantor Prize launched by the Czech Mathematical Society
The Czech Mathematical Society, in cooperation with the Central Committee of the Mathematical Olympiad, has launched the first edition of the Cantor Prize. The award honors teachers who devote themselves to developing students’ mathematical talent and preparing them for Olympiad participation. Nominations are open until November 30, 2025.
Black Heroes of Mathematics 2025
The year 2025 marks the 100th anniversary of the first Black mathematician to earn a PhD — Dr. Elbert Cox, who received his degree from Cornell University in 1925. To celebrate, on October 1–2, the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications and partner institutions held the Black Heroes of Mathematics Conference and a Youth Festival, combining mathematics, history, and representation.
LMS issues statement on trans inclusion
The London Mathematical Society has approved a Statement of Commitment for Trans Inclusion, reaffirming its dedication to fostering an open and respectful environment for all mathematicians. The statement details measures to prevent discrimination and harassment, ensuring that trans and nonbinary individuals feel safe and included within the mathematical community.
AI wins gold-level performance at the IMO
AI models developed by Google DeepMind and OpenAI achieved a performance equivalent to a gold medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad, solving five of the six problems in natural language and within the official time. This marks a remarkable step in formal reasoning and algorithmic creativity, suggesting new possibilities for research support, proof automation, and mathematics education.
CMS calls for award nominations
The Canadian Mathematical Society is accepting nominations for the Excellence in Teaching Award, which recognizes outstanding undergraduate teaching, and the David Borwein Distinguished Career Award, which honors broad and lasting contributions to mathematics in Canada. The deadline for nominations is November 15, 2025.
Ecuadorian Mathematics Olympiad 2025
A total of 2,152 students took part in the Ecuadorian Mathematics Olympiad organized by SEdeM. Only 1.8% earned medals, and over 100 received honorable mentions. The top-performing cities were Quito, Guayaquil, Daule, and Ibarra. These results highlight the enthusiasm and discipline of young students who prove that mathematics is much more than numbers — it is passion, effort, and achievement.
XLIV Portuguese Mathematical Olympiad
The Portuguese Mathematical Society invites schools from primary to secondary levels to participate in the 44th Portuguese Mathematical Olympiad during the 2025/2026 academic year.
