On behalf of the International Council for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM), I extend our warmest congratulations to Professor Masaki Kashiwara on being awarded the 2025 Abel Prize. This well-deserved honor celebrates his profound and visionary contributions to modern mathematics.
Professor Kashiwara is a towering figure in the field of mathematics, whose pioneering work has shaped areas such as algebraic analysis, D-modules, and representation theory. At the heart of his work is the idea of using algebraic tools to understand systems of differential equations—tools that have since become foundational in both pure and applied mathematics. His insights have had far-reaching influence, connecting deep theoretical structures with applications across physics and other sciences.
This year’s Abel Prize is also historic in another sense: Professor Kashiwara is the first laureate from outside Europe or the United States. His recognition highlights the truly global nature of mathematical excellence and the importance of international collaboration in advancing the frontiers of our discipline
