The International Council for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM) warmly congratulates Gerd Faltings (Max Planck Institute for Mathematics, Bonn, Germany) on being awarded the Abel Prize 2026 by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters.

Faltings receives the prize “for introducing powerful tools in arithmetic geometry and resolving long-standing Diophantine conjectures of Mordell and Lang.” His groundbreaking work has profoundly shaped modern number theory and arithmetic geometry, representing one of the most significant achievements in mathematics of the past decades.

The Abel Prize, established in 2002, is widely regarded as the highest distinction in mathematics, comparable to the Nobel Prize in other disciplines.

While Faltings’ contributions lie in the realm of deep and abstract mathematics, they highlight the essential role of fundamental research in the mathematical sciences. Such advances form the conceptual and methodological foundations upon which many developments in applied mathematics ultimately build, including areas such as cryptography and computational number theory.

ICIAM celebrates this outstanding recognition of mathematical excellence and its enduring impact across the mathematical sciences.
