A year of mathematics, a year ahead
As another year comes to an end, it is a good moment to look back at what we have built together and, perhaps even more importantly, to look ahead.
Throughout 2026, ICIAM Dianoia continued to bring together news, events, research, people and initiatives from across the international mathematical community. This would not be possible without the active participation of the institutions that make up the ICIAM community. Throughout the year, colleagues from member institutions shared events, achievements, publications and opportunities, helping us reflect the diversity and vitality of mathematics being developed around the world.
The strong response we received for this final edition of 2026 is particularly encouraging. The volume and variety of contributions remind us that mathematics is not only advancing through individual research results, but also through a remarkably broad network of institutions, researchers and initiatives working across countries, disciplines and applications.
This collective effort is especially significant as we approach 2027, when the international mathematical community will gather for ICIAM 2027. One of the major international congresses devoted to applied and industrial mathematics, the event will once again provide a unique opportunity for researchers from different areas and regions to meet, exchange ideas and strengthen collaborations. For ICIAM, it is also an opportunity to reaffirm its role in connecting the mathematical sciences with the challenges and opportunities of a rapidly changing world.
The arrival of ICIAM 2027 gives particular meaning to the work we have been doing throughout this year. Every contribution to Dianoia, whether a report about a conference, a research achievement, an initiative involving industry, an award, a new publication or an event — is part of a larger picture. Together, these contributions show the scale of the mathematical enterprise and the many ways in which mathematics contributes to science, technology, industry and society.
Looking ahead, there is much to anticipate. But there is also much to continue building. We hope that Dianoia will remain a space where the ICIAM community can share its work, discover what colleagues are doing elsewhere and, perhaps, find the starting point for new conversations and collaborations.
Thank you to all the institutions, researchers and colleagues who contributed to Dianoia during 2026. Your participation is what makes this publication genuinely international and representative of our community.
We look forward to continuing this work together in 2027 — a year that promises to be an important one for ICIAM and for mathematics around the world.
